Gabriela Canudas in Otilia Rauda (2001)
Otilia (Gabriela Canudas) is a woman both blessed and cursed. She is endowed with an incredible, voluptuous figure, and unusual facial characteristics. Because she has some features that others consider beautiful and some that defines the picture of hideousness, her life is bound by the dual nature of that existence. In her relationships with other members of her small Mexican pueblo, she constantly grapples with their conflicting (and yet passionate) feelings of repulsion, desire, jealously, and outright terror. Otilia herself, who constantly must employ the force of her character to overcome what other see as her physical limitations, must always be tormented by unfulfilled romantic impulses. Through some romantic encounters, Otilia proves herself to be capable of extraordinary emotion that others do not have the insight to feel. Directed by Dana Rotberg, Mexico, 110 min.
